Summer Social Media Detox Tips

Summer and taking some much-needed me-time go hand and hand! If your version of “me-time" means a break from socials, we feel you on that one!

Since we work in social media marketing, we are often connected to the world of socials on a professional level and a personal level, so there's no shock that breaks are valuable to us over here at Social Savvy.

It's all too easy to get caught up in the endless scroll of notifications, likes, and shares. With summer upon us, there's no better time to step back and unplug, and enjoy life beyond the screen. If you're looking to put down the digital distractions, here are our top tips on taking a detox from social media.

  1. Set Boundaries: Start by defining specific times during the day when you will check your social media. This could be 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening. Use the rest of the day to focus on real-life interactions and activities. Or, during work hours if you're an SMM like us!

  2. Turn Off Notifications: Notifications can be a constant source of distraction. Turn them off to avoid the temptation to check your phone every few minutes. This small step can make a big difference in your overall mindfulness and presence.

  3. Leave your phone at home: (but consider safety of course!!) Try leaving your phone at home or in your purse so you can focus on being present without the temptation.

  4. Find a replacement hobby: Discover something new beyond your screen. Whether it’s gardening, painting, cooking, or learning a musical instrument, finding a new passion can fill up your time!

  5. Create a Digital-Free Zone: Designate certain areas of your home as digital-free zones. For example, keep your bedroom, dining area, or living room free from phones.

  6. Ask your SO or Friend to join you: Doing a detox with someone could help you feel less like you're doing this all on your own and be more encouraging! Ask a friend or your SO if they would be up for participating with you.

  7. Find what a detox means to you: Maybe a complete detox isn't for you! A detox might mean one app in particular, or maybe all of them. Find out what it means for you specifically.

  8. Declutter + Delete your Apps: Deleting your apps and cleaning out any you don't need anymore could help you not reach for your phone. Out of sight out of mind!

  9. Set a timeframe and/or goals for yourself: Setting a timeframe for this can be super helpful! We love an actionable goal and having something to work towards.

By implementing these tips, you can make the most of your summer while giving yourself a much-needed break from the constant connectivity of social media. Enjoy your social media break, we'll see you when you get back!
