Day In the Life of a Social Media Management Intern at Social Savvy
Securing an internship in digital marketing was always a goal of mine in college, but working as an intern at a social media marketing agency was an even bigger dream! (thank you Social Savvy 😊) As an intern, I’ve learned a lot about organic social media marketing, strategy, research, various online tools, and client management. And, as a gen-z social media addict, I thought I knew everything about social media - only to quickly realize that I didn’t know as much as I thought! 😅
Social media changes on a daily basis, so not every day is the exact same, but here is my typical day in the life of a social media intern:
Morning
While I typically consider myself a morning person, I have to admit I’ve been enjoying sleeping in a bit this summer until around 8:00/9:00 a.m. After I complete my morning routine, I get ready, make a quick breakfast, and drink lotsss of water before logging on for the day!
I usually start by checking emails and Slack to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Then, I go into community management by monitoring our Facebook group for social media managers. I also double-check my to-do list in Asana and our Google calendar for meeting times to time-block my day. Our team and client meetings are typically in the morning, so between those, I work on community management and outbound engagement tasks for several accounts. This includes replying to comments and DMs, leaving comments on other accounts, and sending DMs. At some point in the morning, I take a brief caffeine break to make an iced latte or matcha around 2 hours after I wake up (iykyk). I also work on any creative tasks, such as content creation, around this time.
Lunch
I usually take an hour lunch break and definitely get sucked into the TikTok scroll and zone out. Sometimes I’ll take a quick walk after lunch to help clear my head before returning to work.
Afternoon
After lunch, I typically work on any other general or one-off tasks that need to be done, such as designing graphics for our blog posts, scheduling content, and circling back to each account to respond to any inbound notifications. Before logging off, I check the Facebook group one more time as well as email and Slack.
My internship work doesn’t usually take up an entire day, so after work, I catch up on some other emails, I (used to) do my schoolwork for my college courses, go to the gym, or work on some tasks for my real estate side hustle. After being on social media for the majority of the day, I try to completely unplug in the evenings by rarely checking my phone and avoiding going on any social media platforms until the next day. This helps me have a fresh start in the morning and avoid feeling burnt out from social media.
