10 Steps to Decluttering Your Workspace
Are you clutter-central when it comes to your workspace?
Having an unorganized workspace can:
Make you feel stressed
Impact your productivity (and your co-workers).
Effect your workplace relationships
Increase the amount of lost items and missed due dates
Plus, who doesn't love when all of our stuff is easily accessible and we can feel confident about our space? Stick around as we go through steps you can use to declutter your space, and keep it decluttered, so you can get back to working on all your important boss babe things!
Steps to Declutter Your Workspace:
Think about how you use your space:
If we learned anything from bingeing The Home Edit, it's that organizing has to be tailored to you and the way that you move about your space. Think about things like: what items do you reach for most? What do you use together? What do you need to have out & what can make it look more organized?
Gather supplies:
Get crafty when organizing your space - think about things you can repurpose, where you should add something new, and where you can change your perspective to fit new items. Target and Amazon are my favorites for home-office organizers!
Start Small:
Tackle one area at a time to prevent feeling overwhelmed. Start with your desk, a drawer, or a shelf, and just go one step at a time!
Sort and Categorize:
Group similar items together. Use categories that make sense for how you work such as office supplies, documents, cords, electronics, etc. This step will help you see what you have, what you can eliminate, and what goes well together.
Declutter:
Be honest with yourself and avoid keeping things out of sentimentality or "just in case." Start an area for trash/recycling, keep, and donate, and start going through what you need and don't need.
Organize:
Assign a designated spot for each category of items. Use organizers, bins, shelves, and file folders to keep everything tidy. Labels are a girl's best friend, don't be afraid to pop out that label maker and start getting more detailed with your organizing!
Minimize Paper:
Digitize what you can. Paper clutter is the most difficult to organize, and honestly, are you ever going to look through it or need the paper copy? Probably not! Organize digital files into folders and use cloud storage for easy access.
Create Systems:
Establish a system for staying organized, such as a filing system for important documents and paperwork.
Maintain Regularly:
We're huge fans of CEO days over here and add re-organizing to that recurring task list! Make decluttering a habit by setting aside time each week or month for maintenance. It's easier to keep your workspace tidy than to let it become cluttered again.
Personalize Your Space:
Your at-home office should feel like a happy place! Add personal touches like plants, artwork, or inspirational quotes to create a workspace that feels inviting and motivating.
Remember that decluttering is an ongoing process, not a one-time thing! Make adjustments as you go through to see how your space can continue to become more functional for you, and how it can continue to grow with you.
